When to book your flight
A great experience and just another flight can be worlds apart. The weather has the biggest say in how your flight turns out – the view of the Tatras, calm air, and whether you fly at all. That’s why we recommend the months and times of day that keep the chance of poor weather as low as possible. Our advice is based on 10 years of real measurements from Poprad-Tatry airport.
- 🟢 Pick a green timeFor every month we show the hours with the best chance of a flight with a great view.
- 🗓️ Keep a backup date in mindKeep one more day in reserve. If the weather doesn’t work out, a new date is easier to find.
- 🌦️ Watch the forecastThe booking calendar shows the forecast for the coming days next to every day and flight time.
🎯 What are the chances your flight turns out the way you imagine
Pick a month. We’ll show you the best time of day to fly and how often the weather in that month allowed a flight with a view of the Tatras. Click an hour to see the details.
🗺️ Which time of day in which month
Each cell is one flight hour in local time. Grey hours have no flights: after sunrise the aircraft has to be prepared, and before sunset it has to land safely and go back into the hangar.
📊 Month by month
| Month | Flight with a view | Flight possible | Best time | What to look forward to |
|---|
Flight with a view: on how many days of the month there were at least 2 hours between 9:00 and 16:00 with weather for a flight with a view of the Tatras. Flight possible: the same, but flyable weather is enough, even if the peaks are in the clouds.

✈️ How to improve your chances of a beautiful flight
- ☀️ In summer, fly in the morning or evening. Afternoons bring thermals (slightly bumpy air) and the occasional storm.
- 🌫️ In autumn and winter, not too early. Mornings often bring fog or low cloud in the basin, which usually clears by late morning.
- 🏔️ The clearest views usually come the day after a cold front passes – the Tatras are sharp right up to the peaks.
- ❄️ Snow-capped Tatras can be seen from November to April, most beautifully in spring when the days are longer.
- 🛩️ Why flights are sometimes rescheduled. A small aircraft is sensitive to strong wind, storms and low cloud. If the weather is bad, we reschedule your flight free of charge.
Data source: hourly aviation weather reports (METAR) from Poprad-Tatry airport (LZTT) for 2016 – 2025, a total of 58,354 hours between 5:00 and 20:00. Archive: Iowa Environmental Mesonet, Iowa State University. Processed by Aeroklub Spišská Nová Ves.
How we calculate: an hour is suitable for flying when the average wind was below 15 knots, gusts below 20 knots, visibility at least 5 km, any solid cloud layer at least 1,500 feet (about 450 m) above the airport, and there was no rain, snow or thunderstorm. A flight with a view additionally means the solid cloud layer was above the Tatra peaks. Poprad lies closer to the Tatras and higher than our airfield, where wind and low cloud tend to be less frequent. METAR reports don’t capture thermals (bumpy air), so in summer afternoons we only count them as a less suitable time.
Please note: this is background information from past years to help you pick a date – not a forecast for a specific day or a guarantee that the flight will take place. The pilot always decides based on the current weather and the aircraft.
